For theses & qualitative research

Twelve interviews done.
Nobody has to type them up.

Upload your interview recordings and get both: the verbatim transcript for the appendix and the smoothed clean copy for your analysis. Speech errors out, structure in, the content stays.

The honest math

One hour of interview. Five to eight hours of typing.

The interviews were the exciting part. Then comes the part everyone warns about: listen, rewind, type, rewind again. With ten 45-minute interviews, 50 hours of typing quickly stand between you and your actual work, the analysis.

5–8 hrs

manual transcription takes per hour of audio, with listening, rewinding, correcting.

×10

interviews a typical qualitative thesis has. Do the math.

2 versions

you often need: verbatim for the appendix, smoothed for analysis. Nodl delivers both.

With Nodl

From recording to analysis

  1. Upload the recording

Phone recording, dictation machine, video-call capture: upload the audio file or record directly in the browser.

  2. Transcript and clean copy

Nodl creates the verbatim transcript, and on request the smoothed version: no ums, no broken sentences, content unchanged. That matches content-semantic transcription, the way you describe it in your methods section anyway.

  3. Analyze instead of type

You start straight with categories and coding. The audio stays, you can check original quotes against it anytime.

Example

The raw quote becomes the clean copy

What's said in the interview

“yeah so, um, the switch to working from home was for us, how should I put it, at first it was chaos, you know? Really. But after about two, three months, that, we had these routines, meetings in the morning, and, um, nobody really wants to go back.”

What Nodl makes of it

Clean copy, interview B3, para. 12

The switch to working from home was chaotic at first. After two to three months, however, routines had become established, such as morning meetings. By now nobody on the team wants to go back to the office.

The verbatim transcript is kept, for the appendix and original quotes.

Illustrative example. All content is fictitious.

Objections

What you're right to ask

Am I allowed to have interviews transcribed by AI?

Clarify two things: your interview partners' consent (which you obtain for recording and processing anyway) and your university's rules on tools. Many chairs allow automatic transcription as long as you state it in the methods section. For the ethics application you're in good shape with Nodl: processing runs exclusively through AI providers in the EU that store nothing and train nothing. Storage is encrypted on servers in Germany. And after submission you delete all data completely.

Is the smoothed version scientifically acceptable?

Smoothed transcription by content-semantic rules is an established method when the content, not the language form, is being studied. What matters is that you document your approach in the methods section, and keep the verbatim transcript. Nodl gives you both.

What about dialect and poor recording quality?

Try it with your hardest recording in the free trial. That's more telling than any promise. The audio stays, you can check and correct every spot.

What does it cost as a student?

The free trial includes up to 3 recordings with up to 1 hour(s) per recording. That's enough to check the quality with your real interviews before you decide.
